ClwydAlyn gives insight into its dementia care
To mark the end of Alzheimer's awareness month we talked to Lisa Johnson, Care Home Manager of Chirk Court to find out how ClwydAlyn supports its residents living with dementia to live their best life and be as independent as possible.
Lisa worked closely with the Dementia Services Development Centre (DSDC), at Stirling University, to create a state-of-the-art space designed with the residents needs in mind, producing a space that never loses its homely feel and offers an environment that will help residents and staff maintain and develop people’s skills and increase their confidence.
Lisa spoke to us about her role and the care and support she and her team provide:
“Chirk Court has given high-quality care to its residents for over 30 years, and in 2010, I was tasked with developing the home into a dementia specialist care home, with focussed, dedicated support for its residents.
“Phase 1 of the scheme opened in 2016 where four households were developed to provide specialist care to those living with dementia. The scheme, which offers provision to 14 people in each household, provides residents with the person-centred care they need, with the same Senior Practitioner and care staff working within each household; creating an environment that offers a great working relationship that enhances wellbeing, develops trust, and supports people to live as independently as possible.”
The households also provide end of life care, working to the 6-step palliative care model, whereby people and their families are supported within the home and their normal surroundings; to feel comfortable and safe, rather than that of a hospital which can be disorientating without familiar faces. This helps alleviate a lot of anxiety and gives reassurance that people’s health and support needs are met at a critical time.
“Whatever happens in life, life is precious – we’ve got to improve quality of life, give people a reason to live, and support them to be the best they can be. It’s about what can we do, rather than what can’t we do.
“This has been the team’s motivation ever since it opened. Working to the best practice model for dementia care that reflects ClwydAlyn’s values of trust, hope and kindness on every level.”
