International Women's Day - Emily Jamieson
I started at Clwyd Alyn a month ago and am the Lead Asset Officer for Fire Safety. My role is to ensure the organisation complies with fire safety law and, in addition to remote working due to Covid restrictions, I have also visited our properties and schemes to advise on and review the fire risk assessments in place.
My previous role was with North Wales Fire and Rescue Service as a Compliance Officer, and during this time, I studied Leadership courses outside hours as I have always wanted to manage my own team. This opportunity came to me when I joined ClwydAlyn, and I now have line management responsibilities for two Asset Coordinators. I couldn’t have wished for a better introduction to the organisation, and I love my role; everyone is so friendly.
Traditionally, Heath and Safety roles have had a high male presence, and it is easy to think there are no opportunities. But during my time at North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, I had two mentors – one male, one female – and they were both really inspirational. They gave me loads of support and guidance, and enabled me to go from thinking would I be able to do that, to I’ve done it!
My advice to women entering the industry is to believe in yourself, and if you are friendly and professional and know your job, there are no barriers whatsoever. All the women I have worked with have been such great role models, and have inspired me to work towards where I am now, in my new role with ClwydAlyn.
