Congratulations are in order for golfing champion Gladys Hughes, (pictured on the right) who claimed first place in the Royal Oak Bowl at Betwys-Y-Coed Golf Club earlier this month.
At 86 years young, Gladys was over the moon to be presented with the honour for a fabulous round of golf, which she finished with a nett score of 68! Gladys prevailed by a single shot, to be presented with the Trophy by Anna Evans (pictured on the left), who is 2026 Lady President of Betws-Y-Coed Golf Club, and the owner of the Royal Oak Hotel in Betws-Y-Coed.
As an active member of Betws-Y-Coed Golf Club, Gladys has been playing golf for over 45 years, after taking up the sport when her doctor advised her to start walking to improve her health.
“I am thrilled to win the Cup. I’d considered retiring from golf earlier in the year as my hands & legs were really painful. I’m so pleased I didn’t give up!”
Gladys is an inspiration to residents at Hafan Gwydir, the independent living scheme in Llanrwst, where she has lived since 2018, and where she is an active member of the Hafan Gwydir Tenant’s Association.
“Just two days before her Royal Oak Bowl triumph, Gladys came third in the Lady President’s Day competition!
“Well done Gladys, we are very proud of you!”
