A friendly and welcoming creative writing group in Rhyl, is proving that it’s never too late to put pen to paper. Based at a central Rhyl independent living community, the ladies-only group meets up to write, share and connect.

The Rhyl ladies creative writing group has one mission; to inspire members to write for fun! The group which meets weekly, currently convenes at Gorwel Newydd independent living scheme, on West Parade.

Organised by Frances, the session which takes place every Friday at 10am, is open to any local ladies who’d like to take part, regardless of experience or age!

Joan Withers, age 90, has been attending the group for a number of years. She said:

“It doesn’t matter whether you are a good writer, the whole point is to come along, have fun and give your brain a workout!”

Each week the writers have the opportunity to read out their work, if they would like to, before joining in with a group writing task, where Frances gives them inspiration for the week’s writing. Then they chat over a cup of tea and a biscuit or two and leave with a title to inspire some more writing before the following week’s session.

Pat who joined the group recently found it very welcoming. She said: “There’s always something to smile about!”

And Cheryl, who enjoys listening to everyone’s contributions, added: “It’s interesting how people’s imaginations go off in different directions!”

The group, which is free to attend, is currently encouraging new members to come along and join in; proving that creativity, connection and community can start with just one sentence!

Concluded long-term member Joan: “Come along and have a drink and see what we get up to. There’s no pressure to read out your work, if you don’t want to!”

The Rhyl Ladies Creative Writing Group takes place at Gorwel Newydd, 76-82 West Parade, Rhyl at 10am every Friday during December to March. Participants meet in the reception area. And from April to November meetings move to Rhyl’s Women’s Centre on Water Street.
