Ahead of Remembrance Day on 11th November, residents and staff at Chirk Court have been working hard to create a stunning poppy cascade. The striking handmade display can be seen flowing from the home’s balcony, down to the ground; creating a visual tribute to veterans, including some who now live at the home near Wrexham.

Staff and residents at Chirk Court, a specialist care home for 66 elderly residents and people living Residents Jean Blundell (94) and George Nicol (82), in front of Chirk Court’s poppy display.with dementia, have spent several months united in their mission to create an extraordinary poppy display, to honour the service of veterans and military personnel across the world, on Remembrance Day 2026.

The visual spectacle was conceived by manager, Jane Humphreys, to bring the community together and show respect for local veterans including some of the residents who live at Chirk Court.

Hundreds of handmade poppies have been completed and collected, then turned into the breathtaking display, which has been turning heads across the community. Crafted from recycled plastic bottles which have been painted, plus crocheted and knitted poppies – all the hard work has been a joint effort between staff and residents.

The powerful tribute showcases the importance of person-centred care which is a focus for colleagues at Chirk Court.

“Remembrance means a great deal to the residents and colleagues at Chirk Court. We wanted to create a tribute that reflects the respect and gratitude we have for those who have served.
“It’s been a real team effort. Our Activities Coordinator Nicola has been supporting the residents with painting. Wendy, Tracy and I have been knitting poppies and Kathy one of our House Keepers worked with students from the local college, to place the poppies onto the netting.
“We have had incredibly positive feedback from people in the local community. Everyone has come together and worked exceptionally hard; we are proud to have created such a beautiful display, which has united us all.”
