A new outdoor wellbeing room has been created at Llys Marchan Care Home in Ruthin, to support the mental and physical health of residents and staff; offering a calm and creative space to relax, reflect and connect.

The idea for the space was developed by manager Paula Heath and Senior Day Care Practitioner Lesley Breeze-Axon, who were both keen to create an outdoor retreat where residents could step away from their regular routines and embrace a quiet and relaxing environment amidst nature.

Research shows that time spent in nature can significantly reduce stress or anxiety, and lift mood. Llys Marchan, owned and managed by social housing provider ClwydAlyn, offers 10 registered places, for adults requiring residential care for mental illness; who will all be offered the opportunity to benefit from use of the outdoor wellbeing room.

With the help of staff, ClwydAlyn’s DIY SAS team, four residents and in-house handyperson Kevin Marchin, the metal garden building was transformed using comfortable seating, cosy cushions and inviting plant décor. Mirrors to reflect the light, have been positioned alongside hanging greenery and the team has even incorporated a coffee table, solar lights and a storage unit. The ideal spot to cosy-up with a cup of tea and take a breather.

“This space is not just a room, it’s a place for people to connect, create or simply spend a quiet moment.

“Huge thanks to everyone who contributed, including residents, Lisa and Hien from DIY SAS, who were pivotal in getting the project organised; Lesley, who has our residents’ best interests at the heart everything she does; and all our wonderful staff who gave up their time to help.

“As soon as the last cushion was placed on the sofa, one of our residents made her way to use the space straight away. It was very moving to see and reminded us of the importance of initiatives like this, which mean so much to the members of our Llys Marchan community.”
