Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government Jayne Bryant met with ClwydAlyn’s Head of Development and Growth Penny Storr, to see first-hand how recent Welsh Government Social Housing Grants of over £30 million have shaped the much-needed development of 183 affordable homes in Flintshire.

Social homes provider ClwydAlyn was delighted to welcome Jayne Bryant MS to two Flintshire developments; Hawthorn Meadow at Well Street in Buckley and Northern Gateway at Garden City in Deeside.

The £20m Hawthorn Meadow development of 83 affordable modern homes is a sustainable development of family homes which will be allocated to local families through the Sarth Housing Register and Tai Teg. The development will also benefit from eight bungalows of which two purpose built adapted bungalows, will be allocated to residents with accessibility requirements.

The Northern Gateway development, of 100 affordable, energy-efficient, new homes for local families is a flagship regeneration project on the former Shotton Steelworks/Corus site, and overcame significant historical barriers, before successfully reaching completion, aided by an £18 million Social Housing Grant.

Both schemes were developed by ClwydAlyn in conjunction with contractor Castle Green Partnerships, Flintshire County Council and Welsh Government.

Energy Efficiency Benefits Builds and Residents

Both developments have showcased modern methods of construction to create energy efficient homes, which will contribute towards the long-term financial security of the residents.

Lower Fuel Costs and Energy Savings

Homes across both developments will support the environment and offer fuel efficiencies, with lower carbon emissions, contributing to a greener future. All homes feature:

  • Heated using air source heat pumps
  • Extensive insulation to reduce heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer
  • Provided with solar electricity panels
  • Homes positioned to maximise solar gain and natural daylight

Creating Communities, Not Just Homes

“We were delighted to welcome the Cabinet Secretary to two of our residential schemes in Flintshire.
“Both of these developments are long-standing strategic sites which have been successfully brought to fruition through strong partnerships and determination.
“These well-placed urban schemes have the benefits of easy access to transport, employment and social infrastructure; offering our residents communities not just homes. We are extremely grateful for the Social Housing Grants provided by Welsh Government, which have allowed for the creation of these much-needed, affordable family homes for local residents.”
Penny Storr
Head of Development and Growth, ClwydAlyn
"These two sites in Flintshire show that building the homes people need and building sustainably go hand in hand. Families moving in will benefit from lower energy bills and warmer homes, and I am proud that Welsh Government grants have helped make that possible."
Jayne Bryant
Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government

All the new homes at Hawthorn Meadow and Northern Gateway meet and exceed current regulatory standards including Welsh Government Development Quality Requirements and Welsh Government Housing Quality Standard.
