A newly developed housing scheme in Anglesey has played a key role in the creation of a food provision outlet that tackles food poverty and food waste.

The developers building the new homes at the Hen Ysgol y Bont site, Llangefni are giving back to the local community by supporting the establishment of Bwyd Da Môn

Williams Homes, the contractors building 52 new affordable homes at the site on behalf of housing association ClwydAlyn in partnership with Anglesey County Council and the Welsh Government, have built and installed the counter at the facility.

“An important part of ClwydAlyn’s commitment to building high quality affordable homes is to ensure that all partners involved in our schemes commit to giving back to the local communities in which we work in a wide range of ways, from creating local employment to supporting local initiatives.

“We recognise that times may be hard for a lot of people, especially after the recent increase in the cost of living and it’s important that we do all we can to ensure that help and support is there for those who need it.

“We are delighted that Williams Homes has supported this local initiative on Anglesey as part of our work in the area, and we wish the scheme all the very best of luck in tackling food poverty.”

Executive Director of Development

The Bwyd Da Môn scheme, which is collaboration between various organisations that includes, ClwydAlyn Housing Association, Williams Homes, Isle of Anglesey County Council, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, Ynys Môn Citizens Advice, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, Anglesey Food Bank, private sector organisations and a range of voluntary sector organisations, gives people access to low cost and good quality food that would otherwise be wasted.

Owain Williams at Williams Homes said:

“Williams Homes were happy to support the development of Bwyd Da Môn an exciting new project utilising food that would otherwise to go to landfill to help alleviate food poverty on Anglesey. Our Land and Acquisitions Manager was involved in the inception and development of the project, and we were happy to support her during the development phase and to build and install a bespoke counter for the new premises.”

The Hen Ysgol y Bont scheme will offer energy efficient and carbon friendly homes, built with high performing materials which have been locally sourced, such as the Welsh timber manufactured in Bala, as well as the installation of air source heat pumps instead of traditional heating and hot water systems.

The development is part of ClwydAlyn’s programme to deliver 1,500 new homes in North Wales by 2025 through an investment of £250 million, bringing the total number of homes the housing association owns and manages to over 7,500.
