Judith’s Witty Ditties Bring Smiles to Welshpool Community
At 87 years old, Judith Smith, has found an unexpected passion for writing poetry, inspired by her new home at Neuadd Maldwyn in Welshpool. As well as sharing her poems with family and friends, she’s even been invited to read them for the local Women’s Institute. Whilst creating a book full of her original poems, Judith says that her family and neighbours may recognise their days out and adventures in some of her musings.
“Sometimes I will wake up at 3am, and I have an idea that I just have to write down then and there!”
Judith moved into her new apartment within the recently converted listed independent living scheme, almost a year ago. It was a long-considered move, which meant leaving the home where she had lived with her husband and raised her family. But, from the off, Judith immediately relaxed in her new surroundings.
The atmosphere is one of community, and Judith instantly enjoyed spending time in the communal areas of the scheme. The new environment and shared moments with her neighbours were just the inspiration she needed to embark on her new hobby; and she put pen to paper spurred on by the events around her.
“I was sitting in the lounge when I was first inspired to write”, reveals Judith. Her growing collection of poetry is a mixture of styles from thoughtful and nostalgic to observational and hilarious!
Encouraged by her family and friends, Judith’s memories and light-hearted observations of life at Neuadd Maldwyn have been recognised for their humour and wit; a new way in which to celebrate a fresh chapter of Judith’s life. From days out on the steam railway, to socialising with her neighbours, inspiration for the poetry has appeared naturally; with the pieces bringing smiles and joy to Judith, her new neighbours and family members too. One of her grandchildren provided Judith with a personalised notebook, where she can keep her original pieces.
“It’s amazing to think that Judith has never written before; she has such a natural talent! We’re looking forward to hearing what she writes next!”
Judith lives at ClwydAlyn’s newest independent living scheme in Powys; a supportive environment for older residents, with the opportunity to live and socialise in a community setting.
