Work has started on ClwydAlyn’s £6.5 million development which will provide 17 new homes, with affordable rent, for local families at Craig Y Don, Benllech.

In the heart of Anglesey, 17 new homes are helping to bridge the gap for the growing shortage of accommodation available at affordable social rent for local families. Access to affordable places to live is crucial to communities across Anglesey. These much-needed homes are being built by local contractor, DU Construction, on behalf of social homes provider ClwydAlyn and in partnership with Isle of Anglesey County Council and Welsh Government. The Craig y Don development will offer a combination of two-, three- and four-bedroom homes, and two- and three-bedroom bungalows. All the homes will be fairly allocated through the Common Housing Register.

The high-quality, safe, warm homes will be built using modern methods of construction; ensuring that the energy-efficient new properties will be economical to run and feature exceptional sustainability credentials.

Where possible, the construction will be carried out using locally sourced materials by a local workforce and suppliers; strengthening community ties, supporting businesses and boosting employment opportunities in the area.

Many families in the area are waiting for a suitable place to live, with affordable rent. These properties will allow residents to stay connected with their local community; living, working and contributing to the area which they call home.

“We’re excited to start work on these high-quality homes at Benllech. There is an all-time shortage of affordable rental homes across Anglesey, and we feel it’s vitally important to do as much as we can to address this.
“By providing these new homes, we can offer 17 local families the opportunity to make a fresh start with a secure and stable base.
“In addition, our sustainable homes benefit residents by ensuring lower energy bills and contributing to improved health and wellbeing."

Progressive construction techniques are ensuring that ClwydAlyn’s new homes are built with an effective response to climate change. The homes benefit from low running costs and allow residents the advantage of direct savings on their ongoing expenditure.

Some of the energy efficiency measures at the Craig Y Don development will include:

  • Innovative low carbon heating systems like air and ground-source heat pumps
  • A fabric first approach using ‘Modern Methods of Construction’, utilising as many natural and sustainable materials as possible.
  • Sourcing materials from local manufacturers and suppliers, keeping the associated carbon footprint low.
  • Homes positioned to maximise solar gain and natural daylight levels, using solar energy.
  • Passive stack ventilation systems which automatically measure air quality and adjust the rate of air exchange, reducing operational carbon emissions.
  • Electric car charging facilities.
  • Maximising green spaces to increase biodiversity.
