Five families are celebrating moving into new affordable homes developed by social landlord ClwydAlyn at Rhoslan, Anglesey.

Five local families have started a new chapter of their lives at a development of newly constructed homes, on the site of a former school in Holyhead, Anglesey.

The homes, which include two 4-bedroom homes and three 2-bedroom homes have been built by social homes provider ClwydAlyn in conjunction with DU Construction, Cyngor Sir Ynys Môn, and Welsh Government.

Regeneration of a Town Location

Explained ClwydAlyn’s Project Development Manager, John Jones: “The new homes are built on the site of the former British School constructed by Lord Stanley of Alderley in 1848. In keeping with the history of the location, the scheme has been named Lle Stanley, as chosen by the Local Council. The plaque erected at the frontage was originally positioned on the front gable of the school building. We have restored it and given it pride of place to pay homage to the heritage of the site.”

Other improvements include the replacement of the original degraded railings with a design approved by conservation area guidance. The pastel-coloured front doors at the scheme have been chosen to help invoke a coastal aesthetic.

TACP Funding Delivers Long Term Homes for Families Across Wales

The homes at Rhoslan were funded through Welsh Government’s Transitional Accommodation Capital Programme (TACP). The strategic redevelopment of the site has allowed ClwydAlyn to deliver good quality, affordable and longer-term housing at pace, for families and individuals in need of homes across Wales, in line with the programme’s agenda.

The creation of these five much needed, high-quality, lifetime homes responds to the requirement of Anglesey families waiting for suitable, affordable places to live. These homes provide secure, long-term homes for local residents who have found it a challenge to attain affordable rental options within their own communities.

Lifetime Homes with Lower Bills

These ClwydAlyn homes have been designed with a focus on sustainability. Renewable energy sources including solar energy, air source heat solutions and MVHR (mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery), a home ventilation system which improves indoor air quality and energy efficiency. Plus, the benefits of high levels of modern insulation, contribute towards minimised heat loss, significantly reducing energy consumption, and lowering energy bills.

For residents this translates into a warm, comfortable living environment, improved energy performance, and lower energy bills.

“This new housing project in partnership with ClwydAlyn represents our continued commitment to providing tenants and families with quality homes with varying tenures in communities across the island.
“The Council's Housing Service has a statutory responsibility to assess housing needs and lead on partnership working to provide quality housing locally. Our Housing Strategy 2022 ‐ 2027 is integral as we work independently, and with key partners, to continue to meet the needs of our residents now and in the future."
Councillor Carwyn E Jones
Anglesey Council’s Housing Portfolio holder
"My first impression of my new home is that I love it; I feel really lucky to be moving in here. Previously, my baby boy and I were in temporary accommodation in a small flat, and with our little dog as well, it was difficult. This is going to be so much better for us, and we feel a lot better with having so much more space now."
Ellie Firth
Resident
“After private renting for 12 years, it is fantastic to be with ClwydAlyn. We were threatened with eviction in our last property and could have been made homeless or had to move into shared accommodation because the private rents for a family our size are high.”
“It was incredibly stressful and was affecting my mental health, but after viewing our new home last week, we got the keys today! I’m so happy to have long term security for my three girls; we’re so grateful for this opportunity going forward.”
Nicola
Resident

Concludes John Jones: “We are incredibly proud of these homes which offer affordable living in safe, warm and efficient surroundings. And we hope that all the new residents will be very happy living in them!”

These homes meet and exceed Welsh Government Housing Quality Standard, Welsh Government Development Quality Requirements and Welsh Government Beautiful Homes and Spaces Standards.
