Delighted residents moved into Welshpool’s new independent living apartments in Spring of this year. As they prepare to spend their first Christmas at the scheme, we caught up with them, to find out how they have settled in at Neuadd Maldwyn.

Christmas is a time when community spirit is at a high; this is certainly true at Neuadd Maldwyn, an independent living scheme, for over 60s from the local area.

Residents began to move into the 66-apartment scheme in April 2025 and have since become a thriving community, where they enjoy many activities including day trips, exercise classes, craft events, charity fundraisers, and spend time in the communal areas, which make the scheme so special.

With many events lined up for Christmas the residents are going to have a full schedule! The local male-voice choir will be popping by to perform for residents and their families on December 15th. In addition, the stunning venue has been selected to host Welshpool’s eagerly anticipated annual Fire Service Carol Concert on 18th December.

Resident Steve Sharman (pictured) is known to his fellow community members for his enthusiastic charity fundraising and community spirit. He was the organiser of a resident’s trip on the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway. Although Mr Sharman is currently undergoing treatment for cancer himself, it hasn’t stopped him wanting to give something back and he recently raised £60 for Macmillan selling soft toys.

“We have a nice community here. Everyone enjoyed the trip on the railway and came back with smiling faces. I’m going to organise another one for the beginning of the season.”

One resident, Judith Williams (pictured), has been so taken by her new home and community, that she’s been inspired to write a series of poetry about her experiences at Neuadd Maldwyn. Judith’s poem, The Train Trip, tells the story of the wonderful day out the residents took on the steam railway.

“We’re delighted to see the residents at Neuadd Maldwyn have settled in so fabulously. The scheme is currently full, and this makes for a wonderful atmosphere.
“We have lots planned for the festive season. The decorations are looking superb and seasonal festivities are in full swing; we’re very much looking forward to our first Christmas here!”

Manager, Neuadd Maldwyn

What is independent living?

Independent living helps people to live well on their own terms, in their own home, with the opportunity to receive a little extra support if or when needed. Neuadd Maldwyn offers 66 fully self-contained apartments, that have been designed to be comfortable, safe and accessible.

Every resident is offered a nutritious warm lunch in the restaurant each day. There are staff available to keep the scheme secure and clean. And many shared spaces at Neuadd Maldwyn can be used by residents either individually or as part of a larger group for activities or get-togethers.

Living at Neuadd Maldwyn allows residents to remain independent, whilst having the security that help is close by, should it be necessary.

“Watching the community at Neuadd Maldwyn blossom so quickly has been wonderful.
“And as we prepare to celebrate the first Christmas at the scheme, seeing the residents surrounded by friends and family, and feeling at home, really captures what independent living is all about.”
