Ann Walker (seen in the centre of the picture), moved into Nant Mawr Court, a community for people aged over 55, in Buckley two years ago with her husband Steve. She brought with her a passion for fitness and a positive ‘can do’ attitude.

As she got to know her neighbours, it wasn’t long before Ann saw that her experience as a fitness instructor, could be an asset to her community. She used her love of exercise and community spirit to establish a ‘Chair Aerobics’ class, which has become a popular addition to the scheme’s weekly timetable!

“Two and half years ago, myself and my husband Steve moved into our new home in Buckley.

“I started the chair aerobics sessions because I love teaching and helping other people; seeing how they progress. The class really brings us all together more as a community.”

Ann wanted to provide an opportunity for her neighbours to stay mobile, socialise and have some fun. Usually there are about eight residents who take part in Ann’s chair aerobics session.

Continued Ann: “If only one person turned up, I’d still do the class as it makes everybody feel good!

“It’s great fun; we always have a laugh and go away happy. And people have also told me that the sessions help their mobility.”

Ann is always sure to take into account all of the participants and any health conditions they may have. She offers alternatives in terms of exercises as the class progresses, to help ensure that everyone can take part.

Suggesting that Yoga and Pilates are a great place to start concludes Ann: “As we age, it’s even more important to keep our muscles toned. With conditions that come on as we get older, like arthritis, even a small amount of exercise can help.

“I would encourage anyone who can to join a small exercise group. Exercising in class, you’re more likely to do it, as you feel committed! And, it’s also a great way to make friends!”

Three Ways to Stay Healthy as We Age

You don’t have to join the gym or train for a marathon to keep active. Just like Ann and her neighbours at Nant Mawr Court, building some gentle movement into your weekly routine is a great place to start! Here are Ann’s three top tips for a healthy lifestyle!

  1. Walk Little and Often

A short walk several times a week can make a big difference. Whether it’s a stroll to the shops, or just a wander around the garden; keeping your body and joints moving is the key! Try to move a little every day if you can.

  1. Get Some Fresh Air

We are lucky in Wales to have some lovely surroundings from the sea front and coastal areas to countryside, historic towns and villages. Getting outdoors can give your mood a boost and gives you the opportunity to get some much-needed vitamin D. If walking is difficult, sitting on a bench outdoors and enjoying the fresh air can still be a huge benefit.

  1. Stay Social!

Keeping in touch with others can be just as important as our physical health, with some studies even claiming that active social lives can add a substantial number of years to our lifespan! Whether you prefer taking part in a community exercise class like our Chair Aerobics, meeting a friend for a cuppa or dropping into an event at the local community centre; a good chat with a friend or neighbour can really brighten your day.

Nant Mawr Court is a ClwydAlyn housing scheme for older people, featuring 30 apartments, which benefit from use a communal lounge and regular social activities.
